A person in a dark coat walking down a long white staircase beside a thin rail

Go down the stairs without the rail.

You've started going sideways when nobody's looking. This is the 6-week plan to stop, with physio Nell Ashby.

Show me the six weeks

You know the moment.

Top of the stairs. One hand already reaching for the rail.

You turn sideways, just in case. You hope nobody's watching.

It isn't just your age.

  • You were told to take it easy.
  • So you took it easy.
  • And the stairs got harder.

Knees get stronger when you use them, in small steps, at any age. Nobody showed you the small steps.

A dark wooden staircase with a banister, in a quiet home

Your stairs are the gym.

I'm Nell. I've spent my working life in people's homes, on stairs just like yours.

I built this plan for the women who kept telling me the same thing: I just want to stop being careful.

Nell Ashby, physio

One stair at a time.

Two short sessions a week, on your own stairs.

  1. Week 1

    Both hands on the rail

Stand tall on the bottom stair.
  2. Week 2

    One hand on the rail

    Slow step-ups, two stairs only.
  3. Week 3

    Facing forward

Down the stairs, no more sideways.
  4. Week 4

    Fingertips only

The rail is there. You barely touch it.
  5. Week 5

    With a cup of tea

    Hands busy, knee steady.
  6. Week 6

    No rail.

Top to bottom, on your own.

Carried the washing basket down on Monday and only noticed at the bottom.

My daughter asked why I wasn't holding on. I hadn't realised.

Did the first week in my slippers. That's how easy it is to start.

I'm 72. Went down to the cellar for the first time in a year.

Is it too late for me?

No. Strength can be built at any age. Week 1 starts on your bottom stair, holding on with both hands.

I'm 67 and I thought that ship had sailed. Walked down to the beach last week without stopping.

What if it flares up?

Every week has an easier version. You drop back a stair, and Nell tells you when to move on.

Had a bad week in week 3. Went back a stair like she said, and carried on from there.

I'm not good with apps.

It's a short video and a tick list. If you can watch a reel, you can do this.

My grandson set it up in a minute. I haven't needed him since.

You don't need to be brave. You just need the bottom stair.

See you there.
